Back yard obstacle course July 2011

I searched the internet looking for ideas on building an obstacle course for a family camp-out,  and quite honestly there wasn't much.  So my husband and I discussed the possibilities and created one of our own.   Had such a blast, thought I'd share with you.   We had teams 5 teams of 6,  as we are 5 children in my family it worked.   5 males,  5 females, randomly selected, not necessarily husband and wife.   Then we randomly picked the teenagers and added the younger children and finally the really young and grandmother that had limited ability to participate.   The course was completed in about 10 minutes.   \
Station one,  the traditional tire race,  except we had hula hoops.  One person had to complete the tires,  hoops on one foot, one person had to crawl on all 4,  only two people could do the hoops, everyone else had to run the tires.

RULES: the entire team must run the obstacle course
every member on your team must participate in at least 2 of the obstacles
at the end of the obstacle course your team must have all the items
(horn, net, 2 eggs, frog, spider, 2 paddles,  flag, log)

Station #1 – Ryan’s tire collection (hula hoops)    all team members must do this obstacle.
-          1st one through  on 1 foot  _________________
-          2nd one on two foot             ________________
-          3rd  one on all fours             _______________
-          As soon as the last member of the team has run through, remove a bicycle horn from the last hula hoop,  honk the horn and your team can move to the next obstacle.
Station two,   my backyard is large and we have a pond in the backyard, so we had two members (of their choice)  take the canoe around the island, dock and get a pink fishing net.

STATION  #2 -   Training for Algonquin -   ______________________
                                                                                ______________________
2 team members must put on a life jacket,  get into canoe on the pond, circle the island, dock on the island,  retrieve one net from the island.   The canoe must circle the island again and return to the starting position.   Once both members are out of the canoe, honk the horn and your team can move to the next station.

Station three,  I had placed a basket in a tree with dollar store plastic easter eggs in it. Below are the instructions

STATION #3 -    BIRD NEST in a TREE-      2 team members must do this obstacle with the help of as many as required.                _____________________________
                                _____________________________
Put someone up on your shoulders, or shimmy your way up the tree, or build a pyramid to reach the nest;  retrieve one  egg from the nest, then a second person must get a second egg of a different color.   Once you have collected 2 eggs of different colors,  honk the horn and your team can move to the next station.
Station four was a climbing through a spider web I had made out of rope.  The center piece was an old badminton raquet that we cut the handle off,  the second circle an old hula hoop.  Then I just started running rope from the tree to the center.

STATION  #4 -   THE SPIDER WEB -   4 members of the team must crawl through the spider web without disturbing the spider.  Each must go through a different opening.    If the large purple and black spider falls down, put her back up and that person must start over.  If the small black spiders fall down,
don’t worry, but your team must place all the little black spiders back in the web before leaving the station.   Collect ONE small black spider and put it in your net.  Honk your horn and move to the next station.

The next was pretty easy,  I hung a hoop from 2 trees.  The team had to pass two members through the hoop, whatever way the wanted.  The rules stated like a plane... however that was more difficult than first expected so we accepted any which way.

STATION  #5  -  FLIGHT  TO ?
2 members of the team must go through the hanging hoop like a plane with the help of their team members.  Lift a member of your team and pass him or her along as they fly through the hoop.   Then repeat with a second member.  Big or small, as long as everyone helps, you should have a successful flight.  Once both members have landed from their flight, honk your horn and move to the next station.   Don’t forget to collect one mini flag and place it in the net.

Following that, I did use an idea found on the net.   I placed about 100 balloons, tied together with string, under a table and called this the balloon cave.  I only put 6 green balloons in the mix and taped them individually to the underside of the table.
STATION #6 -   BALLOON CAVE -   All members of the team must crawl through the balloon cave to get to the next obstacle station,  however one member is responsible for finding and collecting a GREEN balloon from the cave.  This person must be last one through.   Once he is out of the cave and the green balloon is in the net, honk your horn and hurry to the next station.

The next was easy.  I have a ditch along the side of my property.  I had a long bench and laid it across.  The team crossed the ditch by walking on the bench.  I had bought these stretchy frogs at the dollar store and had pinned them to the bench.  One person had to bend down and pick up a frog while balancing on the bench.

STATION #7    WALK the log, CROSS THE DITCH-   All members of the team must walk along the bench to cross the ditch to get to the next obstacle, however one member is responsible for finding and collecting a small little frog that will be sitting on the log without falling off.   This person must be last one across.  Once the frog is in the net, honk your horn and hurry to the next station.

Station #8
My husband has built a deer stand along the ditch.  I bought paddles with those little rubber balls attached at the dollar store.  6 in a pack each in the shape of a different animal, so with two packs,  I placed them at the top of the deer stand upside down.  The first person grabbed any,  the second had to find the match.

STATION  #8 -  TREE STAND-  Two members of the team must collect a paddle from the top of the of the tree stand.  Member #1 will climb, a choose one paddle from the top, then a second person must get a second paddle of the same animal.   Once you have collected 2 paddles, honk the horn and your team can move to the next station.

STATION # 9
I purchased 6 bails of hay.  The team had to put them together to make steps and lean a old wood pallet on the other side.
Two people had to climb the pallet, then walk down the hay steps.

Station #10 -  Using an old ice fishing sleigh with a long rope attached, one person was able to sit in the sleigh, (typically your slowest runner),  one person had to run to the wood pile, get a piece of wood then run back.

DRAG THEM ALL BACK-
choose one team member to be pulled in the sleigh for the final obstacle.   One team member must run to the wood pile and collect one piece of wood and run back to the sleigh and give the player sitting in the sleigh the log.   The other team member will work to together and all pull the sleigh to the finish line.  ALL team members must be holding the rope and pulling.  When the log is dropped in the fire pit, the clock will stop.
